Student Eligibility Requirements
While I would love to teach everybody, I only have limited time available. To make sure I’m teaching the type of students that will learn the most from me, I only accept students who meet the following requirements:
Intermediate and advanced guitarists only
I teach best when I’m helping a student improve their abilities. If you’re a beginner, there are plenty of other teachers who are better than me at covering the basics.
If you’re unsure whether you’re a beginner or intermediate guitarist, here are some examples of things I help my intermediate students learn:
- Improvise over any backing track, in different styles and keys
- Work on difficult solos and techniques
- Write music from scratch
- Use music theory to come up with better solos and riffs
If the above sound challenging to you, that’s a good sign I’m right for you. If they sound impossible and you need help with something like playing barre chords, I’m not the right teacher for you yet. There are a lot of teachers who are great at teaching basic technique. I’m better at teaching more advanced topics.
Electric guitar only
I’m passionate about electric guitar and give the best quality lessons when covering electric guitar-based music. Whether you play 6, 7, or 8 strings, I can help you.
18 years and up
If you like Steve Vai, I’m probably the right teacher for you
Late teens and adults are more likely to benefit from my lessons than younger teens or children. If you’re between 16 and 18 and feel you’re serious enough to take lessons with me, contact me (with your parent’s permission) and we’ll talk about it.
An interest in metal, rock or blues
You’ll learn the best when you’re matched with a teacher who truly enjoys the same music you enjoy. Many guitar teachers claim they’re experts in any style. Very few actually are. I’m honest enough to say that I’m not an expert at jazz, classical music or other styles of music I don’t listen to.
Here are some of my favorite guitarists and bands to give you an idea of what styles of music I can help you with:

- Pink Floyd
- Symphony X
Of course, there are others, but the above gives you an idea of what I know best. If you don’t like or listen to any of the above, then I’m probably not the right guitar teacher for you. If you like a lot of the above bands and guitarists, that’s a good sign I’m right for you.
Skype Guitar Lesson Rates
I offer lessons in 45-minute blocks. This is a little different to other teachers who usually offer 30 and 60 minute lessons. From experience, I feel that 30-minute lessons are too short for most people and 60 minutes is just a bit too long for many. 45-minute lessons seem to work just right.
The rate for 45-minute weekly lessons is $40 USD.
Lessons are weekly to ensure you’re given consistent advice and motivation to develop your skills. I don’t offer fortnightly lessons because they’re too far apart for students to make meaningful progress.
If you’re a super-serious guitarist who really wants to develop your skills and understanding, you might be wondering whether you could do a longer lesson each week. I don’t offer longer lessons for the same reason you shouldn’t do long practice sessions. Short and regular lessons are more effective than long lessons. So if you do want to progress at a faster rate, I’m happy for you to book two lessons per week. This is significantly better than one long lesson per week and you’ll progress much faster.

Once you find a time that works for you, let me know asap here and I’ll put it on hold for you. There’s nothing worse than missing out on your preferred time because somebody else booked it in before you.
